Using Aromatherapy to help the state of mind and emotions goes back thousands of years, and in our busy lives today, I feel we need it more than ever! Having anxiety and chronic pain, plus ongoing personal stresses, (apologies for lack of posts recently), I thought I would share with you some products that I use regularly to help my emotions.
We all go through times of having a certain amount of stress, some is good for us, yet if it goes on for long periods of time, can cause depression and other health issues. Aromatherapy has proven through many decades to help mood. Smells work via our olfactory system, where thousands of nerve cells in our noses, carry scents straight to the Olfactory bulb. This is positioned right at the back of our noses, where messages travel along the nerves to our brains and limbic system. The limbic system is our emotional control centre, where sensory experiences such as our memories, instincts and feelings happen. So, aromatherapy can help our emotional behaviour, by way of scents triggering memories and feelings, and altering our emotional state.
Having been an IFA qualified aromatherapist, I am a true believer in the benefits of botanical oils, on both body and mind. By using sprays and rollerballs, you get an instant hit of scent blends, allowing you to breathe deeply, focus and help soothe or uplift. The products featured here, are easy to use both at home, work and on the go, and what I use depending on my mood and emotional needs.
Balance, Calm and Focus
To ease and calm troubled/stressed minds, heavier middle and base notes work well, helping to slow breathing, soothe and de-stress the mind. Deeper fragrance notes can help calm anxieties, lower blood pressure and bring about focus when things are a little crazy.
Aveda ‘Chakra 3’ Spray & ‘Stress-Fix’ Rollerball
Aveda as a brand focus on wellbeing beauty, and certainly when it comes to the scent blends of their products. I love their Chakra sprays as they are easy to use and seem to work for me. Chakra 3 has a blend of pure essential oils to help balance the ‘power chakra’, where we control our motivation and desires. It includes Organic Lavender, Lemon and Fir Balsam to help balance, and in order to help motivate and promote focus. It has a pleasant aroma that helps calm my senses yet, enables me to focus, especially when my head is full of so many thoughts.
The handy Stress-Fix rollerball, is ideal for helping calm on-the-go. Containing organic oil essences of Lavender, Lavandin and Clary Sage, this scent blend is very soothing and grounding. I carry one of these in my bag at all times, to roll on pulse points such as wrists, side of neck. There is always something to wind you up in life, and I find a good inhalation of this soothing blend helps switch the mind to calm. Aveda’s rollerballs last for months and I highly recommend them.
Aromacure Calming Spray
The lady that runs the brand Aromacure is lovely, and I have used a few of her aromatherapy products since I have been blogging, mainly massage blends. This recent offering is a ‘Calming Spray’ which, has a beautiful scent. Made with a base of light Coconut oil, it contains essential oils of Lavender, Sandalwood, Neroli, Ylang Ylang and Clary Sage. It comes in a large 100ml spray bottle, although it has a more direct spray delivery rather than a mist, so I use a good ‘squirt’ on my wrists and inhale a few times. The aroma is in no way heavy, but a pretty scent with the ingredients of Neroli and Ylang Ylang which uplift. Suitable for times of anxiety and stress, this is a great one for by the phone, work desk or bag!
Uplift, Revitalise and promote Happy
These scent products help raise the spirit, lift low mood and give the mind a boost. When you need an uplift, top notes of citruses and some flower botanicals are the ones that will work. Citrus scents are used in aromatherapy massage to help treat depression. Blends need to be fresh and zesty to revitalise mind and soul, and able to evoke good feelings.
Tisserand ‘Happy’ rollerball (NEW)
Tisserand are such a good and long-standing natural aromatherapy brand, with so many product choices for all body care and well being needs. This rollerball is aimed at helping encourage those happy emotions. Contained in a base of Jojoba oil, are essential oils of Bergamot, Lemon Tea Tree and Nutmeg which, are all uplifting. I find this helpful to pop on pulse points when I need to inhale a bright, cheery scent. Ideal for a burst of energy, whenever you feel in need of a little ray of sunshine, especially as citrus notes help lift a low mood.
Jurlique Revitalising Blend Mist
With the ‘Revitalising Mist’ blend from Jurlique, I tend to spritz from above so the blend falls around and on me, to give a refreshing lift. Containing essential oils of Orange, Bergamot, Lemon and Lavender which help to refresh and promote alertness. I find this a good blend for using when I feel tired and need a boost in the day, and is fab for spraying around a room to refresh and uplift the air around you.
Ease Pain, Relax and Sleep
Essential oils not only work on the sense of smell, but on body tissue and cells, so included in this relaxing bunch, are blends to help promote pain relief.
Aveda Blue Oil & NEW Cooling Oil, plus Tisserand Sweet Dreams Pillow Mist.
The Blue Oil rollerball can be used for both inhalation and pain relief. This fairly potent but enjoyable blend is fresh, and contains certified organic essential oils of Peppermint and Blue Chamomile. It is helpful for headaches, using on temples and back of the neck, and great for massaging in to tight areas of muscle. Blue Chamomile helps alleviate pain, so this is a handy one for people who sit at a desk (tense shoulders), plus gym bunnies and ‘Spoonies’ like me for sore, tight muscle fibres. The aroma of the Peppermint helps to revitalise.
The NEW ‘Cooling Oil’ has a similar blend, containing certified organic essential oils of Blue Chamomile and Peppermint, plus the addition of Menthol to invigorate and cool. A fab blend for summer, especially for those with ‘tropical moments’, and headache sufferers. I have been trying this one out on my temples and back of neck for my headaches/migraines, and find it more beneficial the the Blue oil, due to its cooling effect. I can’t recommend these rollerballs enough, as although they have an effect on the senses, they are helpful for areas of tension pain.
The Tisserand ‘Sweet Dreams Pillow Mist’ is a new found love for me. I have used another fab brand pillow spray for a few years which, I still love, but for a couple of months now, this has helped me to totally relax and fall asleep faster. Containing essential oils of Lavender, Jasmine, Cypress, Bergamot, Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang, and Copaiba Balsam, it has a heavenly scent (well, to my nose anyway)! More recently, I even spray this on my nightie a while before bed, to help me wind down after some really stressful days.

Overall Feel Good and Centre
Some aromas can deliver a general ‘all-round’ good feeling, and here are a couple that I simply really enjoy spritzing in my personal space most days. For me, they provide happy, cocooning feelings that help keep my emotions on the level, ann help me to feel a little better about myself.
Aveda Chakra 4 Mist, & Shampure Dry Hair Conditioner
The Chakra 4 spray, is aimed at the heart chakra which, when balanced, helps promotes feelings of love, empathy and harmony. Containing essential oils of Sandalwood, certified organic Mandarin, and Palmarosa, plus other pure plant essences, this is suitable for using as an overall ‘feel good’ inhalation mist. I enjoy the beautiful fragrance blend, and use it a few times during the day, as it seems to help keep me levelled and content. A good one to spray around those who get tense and argumentative too.
Aveda thermal Dry Conditioner
Not only does this soften and refresh the hair, but Aveda Shampure™ has a blend of 25 botanical essences, producing a gorgeous natural aroma to help you relax as you inhale. Including organic essential oils of Lavender, Petitgrain and Ylang Ylang, this misted on 2nd or 3rd day hair, provides a really calming, nurturing aroma for the senses. If you are at all a Shampure fan, you will know just how good this earthy fragrance makes you feel.
I know there are many different variations of aromatherapy products, but mists and rollerballs are an easy, and portable, way of using scent to help mood and emotions. I could not be without most of these featured in this post, (especially recently for sure), and I hope by sharing them, it has given you some ideas.
Are there any mists or rollerballs that you love and can recommend?
