As skin actively works to repair itself while we sleep, it is the best time to apply treatments after cleansing, so I thought I would share some of my nighttime skincare loves. There’s some goodies in here, including longterm faves, plus more recent finds that I am using in my routines. If you are 35+/have sensitive/dehydrated skin, there might be some handy finds that you’ve not yet tried.
My Nighttime Skincare Treatments
A bit of info on my skin before I start, as some of you might relate and like the sound of a product to try on your skin too.
Skin type/Age : Dehydrated and thirsty, sensitive, with broken capillaries. Occasional tendency to dryness, I’m 50, plus some hyper-pigmentation and skin slackening…yes, sadly it all heads south at some point.
If I had to pick just one skincare product to take with me on a dessert island, it would be Decleor Aromessence Neroli Night Balm (aka Balm Essential). It is suitable for all skin types, and when I worked for the brand as a therapist, this was one of THE most used products in the treatment room, aside from Prolagene or Neroli oil. Neroli is great at hydrating the skin, but also for helping to get skin that is misbehaving, back into balance. I regularly turn to this at night, especially when my skin is dehydrated, or going through changes due to hormones, periods of stress or illness. Go check out my If Carlsberg Made Face Balms post for more in-depth info!
Decleor Aromessence Iris Night Balm is for ageing skin, a really good balm to treat fine lines, slackness and dullness. This plumps out lines and helps firm the skin, as well as being hydrating, so when I feel I’m noticing more fine lines and slackness, I choose Iris.
Using a Decleor night balm is as easy as it gets. Thoroughly cleanse skin, take a pea size amount and emulsify between palms, inhale the scent and massage onto face and neck, job done. These 100% pure aromatherapy balms work in synergy with the skin overnight, and in the morning, skin looks and feels so much better.
If I’m doing a course of balms, instead of using other products, I usually go to Neroli for a week, then swap for a week of Iris, depending on my skins needs. I have gone through pots of these balms over the years, yet they last ages. Skin always produces results from using and improvements can be seen as early as the next morning.
I find this treatment cream, Korres Wild Rose Advanced Night Repair (£26), a simple yet effective pot of joy. It’s delicately fragranced by the wild rose and buttery soft on the skin. It brightens and softens the skin’s surface texture, and is even gentle on my sensitive skin. I always find I do a double take in the mirror the morning after using, as skin is always sombright. Plus my broken capillaries or any sensitivity are calmed, and my skin feels satin soft and plump. Find more posts with info on this lovely product here and here.
When I need to ‘up the anti’, I find with my sensitive skin I don’t always get on with Glycolic treatments, and I was scared stiff of using Retinol. That was until I tried Merumaya Retinol Resurfacing Treatment, £33-50 for 30ml. This is a gentle Retinol specially formulated by Merumaya scientists, much like all of their products, they are extremely gentle on sensitive skins like mine. The results after using this over a serum or oil are amazing after a couple of weeks! Find my full review here.
The layer products I usually prefer to use underneath the Retinol, are Elemis Pro-Collagen Super Serum and Siskyn Frankincense & Jasmine Luxe Night Oil. They have amazing ingredients and textures, helping to feed and nourish the skin, and help me achieve better results with the Retinol, as well smelling beautiful whilst using.
For dehydration on warmer nights, or times when I’m getting a lot of
hot flushes ‘tropical moments’, these two are hydrating and calming. After cleansing, I apply a layer of Pixi H2O Skindrink, a gel texture that has water encapsulated within the formula, along with Aloe Vera and Green Tea. It ‘does what it says on the tin’, making skin feel like it’s had a drink of water.
I let this absorb into the skin while I clean my teeth, then apply a layer of Pixi Beauty Sleep Cream. This beautiful smelling night treatment contains oils of Lavender, Bergamot and Lemon, which works well on the senses. It is also rich in Mango Butter to soften the skin. This can be used on it’s own as a night treatment, whilst the H2O can be used for daytime, especially under makeup in the summer. I like to use together for a surge of moisture, plus they cool and calm the skin, ideal for warm, sweaty nights when skin loses more moisture.

A fairly recent discovery, and definitely a skincare love, is the Aveda Tulasãra Wedding Masque. This has a beautiful creamy texture that sinks into the skin, and a gorgeous scent thanks to the ingredient of Jasmine. Packed with botanicals and plant stem cells, this brightens the skin for the next day, and helps plump when using over time. Using after pressing in Aveda’s Hydrating treatment lotion, I love the wedding masque for a little luxury overnight pamper. Read more about it in my post here.
This new addition to my night care routines, is more for those wanting to address skin with signs of ageing. Trilogy Age Proof Replenishing Night Cream uses their latest formulation within the Age Proof range. Containing Glycablend™, a bio-active blend of Sweet Almond, Marula seed, Chia Seed and Strawberry seed oils, plus other powerful ingredients of Hyaluoronic Acid, Vitamin E and Co-Enzyme Q10.
This is a big-guns cream, yet using natural ingredients rather than chemicals, so it’s definitely my cup of tea. It has a lovely subtle fragrance, and the rich formulation is designed to repair skin overnight by improving elasticity and skin suppleness. All ideal needs for a night treatment. I wasn’t sure if this would suit my sensitive/delicate skin, but I’m finding it really good. Sinking in well, my skin starts to feel softened and juicy as I get into bed. In the morning it looks bright, surface texture seems more rejuvenated, plus it feels more plump. A good cream for skin that’s losing it’s bounce, I love the feel of this as it sinks into the skin, and I’m looking forward to more results.
Find it at Trilogy UK, £32-50 for 6o ml.
I hope you enjoyed this post & I’d love to hear what your favourite night creams are!
