Wellness Edit : Self-Love Health Boosts

I feel it’s time to get down to a good old health boost, especially now we’re the other side of January, when many of us struggle a bit and feel lethargic. In this wellness edit, and as it’s Valentine’s day, I’m focusing on a few things to give yourself and your health, some well deserved self-love!

January is a long old month, and it feels even longer when your health is not great. The grey days don’t help anyone struggling with mental health either, so if serotonin levels are low and you don’t own a light box, the body and brain need a bit of extra self-care. Exercise, relaxation, diet and wellness products are all important in helping to maintain health, so I want to share a few things I’m now using regularly. Self-care is about showing your body and mind some love, in order care for your overall wellbeing.

So let’s start with sleep…

L’Occitane Aromacologie Relaxing Pillow Mist

If we don’t get enough sleep, our bodies and lives are affected, and we end up not being able to function well. Having Fibro, I struggle with sleep, so I’ve used pillow sprays for several years. Now I don’t know about you, but there are a few I find helpful and then some that just don’t plump my pillow. I first tried this Aromacologie blend from L’Occitane at the end of last summer, and so far… I haven’t looked back. For me, this really is a good’un!

It contains 100% natural ingredients ~ Lavender, Bergamot, Mandarin, Sweet Orange and Geranium essential oils.

If a pillow spray does not have the right blend, as in too much or too little of one or more oils, it may not suit the user. I have found this blend so relaxing, even with a racing mind, or watching tv in bed sometimes (yes naughty I know, but strangely it can help me relax)… I just seem to nod off super fast when I use this.

I spray on each end of my pillow when I am about to get into bed, and just simply breathe. This scent seems to send me off to sleep much quicker than a couple of other pillow sprays I own, which now sit in my bedside drawer. I find If I go back to to a different one for a night, I am straight back to L’Occitane the next. So if you need some help in getting off to sleep, I really recommend this lovely pillow mist, to start loving your 8 hours again!

Overnight Oats

We should all be eating oats every, single, day. Why? Okay here’s the low down… Oats are a slow release energy foodstuff which help maintain energy levels throughout the day. They are low in calories and fat and help keep you feeling fuller for longer, so can help with weight loss. As they are packed with antioxidants and magnesium, they help keep cholesterol levels low and stabilise blood sugars, therefore keep the heart healthy and are also good for diabetics. Oats contain beta-glucan, a good source of fibre (‘cos we all gotta ‘go’ regularly!), plus oats are nutritionally good for the skin, and may also help prevent colon and rectal cancers.

Now are they not good reasons to show your body some love and be part of your daily diet ?

An oat bar is yummy snack, a bowl of warm porridge oats is great on a cold morning, but for ease, speed and a tasty alternative, I love overnight oats. You can make it to how you like it, switch up the fruit, use an alternative milk, add extras…its all personal choice!

Here’s my most used recipe :

  • 1 Banana
  • 1 small cup of oats
  • 1/2 a cup of coconut yogurt
  • 1/2 cup of coconut milk
  • 1 tblspn maple syrup (if you like a bit of extra sweetness)
  • 1 tablspn of chia seeds
  • 1/2 a cup of fruits (or more if you fancy)
  • Tablspn of nuts, e.g. flaked/whole almonds, pecans

First, I mash the banana in a bowl, add the oats, yogurt, milk and carefully mix together, then place in the fridge overnight. I then put one or two types of frozen fruit in a small bowl, leaving in the fridge to defrost overnight. In the morning, I add the Maple Syrup to the fruit and place in the microwave for around 40 seconds, for a sort of fruit coolis. The oats absorb most of the the liquids overnight, so just pour on the fruit, add the chia seeds and nuts. Thats it..dive right in for a tasty, healthy brekkie that helps fuel the body and soul. Overnight oats…I love you!

Matcha Latte/Frappé

Matcha. Sometimes an acquired taste but boy does this pack a punch as an energy booster. If you suffer from the odd slump, or suffer with chronic fatigue like me, I find having just one matcha drink around 10 or 11 am, it really helps give me energy throughout the day.

Matcha is a finely ground green powder, made from the leaves of Camellia Sinensis. Compared with normal green tea, Matcha contains 137 more antioxidants! It can help detox, help weight loss and containing L-Theanine, it can also help to reduce anxiety and definitely boosts energy. Its a supercharged green tea, quite rich with a little grassiness to its flavour, but it has a sweetness too.

There are many ways of incorporating Matcha into your diet, it doesn’t only have to be as tea, latte/frappé. It can be added to juices and smoothies, (remembering to whisk until powder is dissolved before drinking). A little can also be sprinkled on salads, pasta and rice dishes, also to cereal, plus yogurt and desserts. You can even make your own green tea ice cream, great for a summer treat and when needing a boost. I’ve not had green ice cream yet, but fancy making matcha ‘nice cream’ in the summer, with frozen bananas and coconut cream. Yummy and healthy.

I love adding 1 teaspoon of matcha to coconut milk in the Nutri Bullet, with a squirt of Maple syrup and a little ice for a frappé. I find if I hit the fatigue wall around mid-morning, drinking this provides a real boost and keeps me going for the rest of the day!

ION SEI Toothbrush

This new patented, innovative toothbrush from ION-Sei, uses ionic technology. Working with the body’s natural electrical charge, it produces an opposite charge to not only remove plaque and bacterial growth, but to actually help suppress it. It is also suggested from the company’s clinical trials, that it can help those with periodontitis (inflammation of the gums due to bacteria). Having some issues with this myself and a little bleeding, this is one reason I am now using the ION Sei brush.

The 3 middle lights on the ION Sei brush show I have mine set to DEEP clean mode, the lower lights show the charge level.

The Mr and I have been using both versions of these, a capful swilled around for 1 minute as instructed, after cleaning our teeth. I’d say the flavour of the fresh breath version is more like dentist mouthwash, but not harsh like many off the shelf varieties. The dry mouth version is a little thicker in consistency, and the tingling mint tastes fab. They work well at keeping your breath fresh and feeling clean, and the dry mouth version I find quite moisturising. I’m happy to show my mouth some love with these natural mouthwashes, and it can be found in Boots chemists.

    Hi Heidi! Loved this post! Reading about your overnight oats recipe made me hungry though! I’m going to buy some oats tomorrow! Glad the weather has cheered up (for now) it really makes a big difference to energy levels and mood doesn’t it?! I’m also going to get a pillow spray (the L’Occitane sounds fab!) I leave my phone outside my room in the night and it’s helped me relax more! Hope you have a healthy, happy February! Lisa xx

      Sorry I made you hungry Lisa, and do let me know what variations you come yp with if you make overnight oats! We’ve had fog and grey here for a couple days so knew it wouldn’t last.
